Thousands of years ago, armies of man-sized flying mantis warriors harried the Vanara and their humanoid slaves. Known simply as Devil Mantises, these former shock troops of the Doom Weavers look like giant versions of their tiny namesakes, but have clawed hands with opposable thumbs capable of wielding melee and ranged weapons. The colors, spines, and textures of their carapaces vary between different tribes and help them blend in to their native environment (which players choose during character creation.) They lack the mouth parts to speak, but they communicate telepathically.

The Doom Weavers created Devil Mantises to serve as scouts and flanking troops (not to mention a food source) during the millenia in which they tried to conquer Numanaria. Females lay a clutch of 1d6 eggs once per year, which she guards fiercely until they hatch. Most Devil Mantises in the wilds live in small tribes, so the females are fed and protected during their vigil.

After the cataclysms, humans captured Devil Mantises and used them as guards in their old empire. Today, they live and breed in special cambers of the Five-Sided Temple and guard the Black Obelisk in Kyrishia. However, they are no longer slaves and enjoy the same rights as all other sentient beings in Kyrisha.

Devil Mantis adventurers venture into the wild for the pure joy of the hunt. They have a disconcerting habit of eating what they kill. Their carapaces protect them from discomfort in all but the most harsh circumstances, and they need only a full belly to be happy. The need to hunt food and their insatiable curiosity are the only desires that vex the Devil Mantis; breeding is as passionless as relieving a severe itch. Therefore, even non-monk Devil Mantises are serene in times of comfort and adversity alike.
